But you don’t need strong athletic skills or experience with other sports like surfing, snowboarding or skateboarding to become an accomplished hang gliding pilot.

So how long does it take to learn how to hang glide?

It depends on your experience, what type of glider you choose, and how quickly you can learn, but typically between 5-10 lessons (about 3 months or so) is enough time for a beginner to get the hang of things. In that amount of time, you will have learned about the sport’s history, equipment basics, maneuvers, lessons, and safety procedures. The key to quickly learning how to hang glide the right way is to get settled in with a certified instructor or hang gliding school from the start.

You will also become familiar with weather conditions pilots must heed prior to flying. Is It Hard To Take Off With A Hang Glider?

It depends. It’s not a trivial task and it takes some skill to do it, especially if you want to do it well and in the safest way possible. If you're determined, it's something you can learn fairly quickly.

How Hard Is It To Land A Hang Glider?

Landing a hang glider is not that difficult. Just get it to the ground as smoothly and quickly as you can! Okay I know I just simplified that down quite a bit, since landing is arguably the most difficult, stressful, and dangerous part of any flying operation, including hang gliding. But it might not be as hard as you think.

The main thing to remember is how to approach the landing area in relation to the wind so your final glide path will be straight down towards where you want to land. If there’s no wind or very little of it when landing (always hope for this!), it’s much easier to land without worrying about a sudden gust blowing you off course.

Another thing that will make your landings better is understanding how gliders work. Since there’s no engine on the aircraft, you have to be able to manage your speed with just the angle of approach, your body movement, and your general sense of control over the glider. It takes time and practice, but after a few successful landings you’ll be good to go.

If everything goes according to plan and there are no surprises when it comes time for landing, a good rule of thumb is to start your flare (pulling up on the control bar) about 20-30 feet above the ground and slowly come in to land.
