‍Is Mississippi A Good Place To Go Hang Gliding?

If you’re looking for a state to travel to that’s chock-full of well-known launch sites and professional companies that offer hang gliding classes and flights, then Mississippi is not the place to go. There are very few, if any, professional hang gliding companies in the state, and pretty much all of the hang gliding here is done by individuals getting out there on their own.

Not only is this what the research says, but I actually moved to Mississippi myself a few years ago and I’m currently writing this from the comfort of my own home here in the state! One of the biggest reasons for the state not being one of the best for hang gliding is that it’s mostly just flat land. There aren’t really any mountains or hills, which can make foot launching incredibly difficult.

That said, Mississippi does not get the credit that it deserves when it comes to beautiful views and amazing sites to see from the skies. And just because there aren’t mountains and hills in every major area in the state, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to go hang gliding here. It’s just a bit more difficult. But once you get up in the air, you’re in for a treat that you might not have expected.

As a southern state, the weather here in Mississippi is also amazing for hang gliding ,especially during the spring and fall. Winter can still get pretty chilly, with temperatures often in the low to mid-40s during the day. And summer can be downright hot and humid. But in the spring and the fall, you’re treated to many months of perfect temperatures and clear blue skies, making this a great state for hang gliding if you know where to go.

Best Places To Go Hang Gliding In Mississippi

As mentioned above, you won’t find any big professional hang gliding companies or well-known launch sites here in Mississippi. But as long as you’re able to get up in the air, usually via scooter towing or aerotowing, there are still some amazing places to go. These are some of the best, including my personal favorites as a resident of the state.

Biloxi

Biloxi, MS is one of the best hidden gems in the country in general, not just for hang gliding. Located on the southern coast of the state right on the Gulf of Mexico, Biloxi is a lively town with lots to do. There's a beach, plenty of hotels, lots of restaurants, and a number of casinos. In fact, Biloxi is home to the third-most casinos in the US, behind only Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Who knew?

And oh yeah, let's not forget about the opportunity to hang glide nearby. The average weather in Biloxi is fairly mild, so you can pretty much go any time of year and have a good experience. Just be sure to check the forecast before you go! Located on the beach, you can glide over the water (or even go paragliding) and see the Gulf stretch out seemingly endlessly.

When you get done gliding, as mentioned above, there are plenty of things to do. The beach is a great place to relax, and there are plenty of restaurants serving up some delicious seafood. If you're looking for a little more excitement, you can visit one of the many casinos in town. Or, if you're looking for a day trip, consider visiting some of the other great towns in the area, like Gulfport or Pascagoula.

Gulfport

Gulfport is another great option for hang gliding in Mississippi. Located just west of Biloxi, Gulfport is right on the Gulf Coast as well. It's a little smaller than Biloxi but still has plenty to do. There are several beaches, hotels, restaurants, and even a casino if you're looking for some extra fun.

The average temperature in Gulfport is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the spring through the fall, making it a great option for spring and summer hang gliding. In the late fall and even heading into winter, the temperatures are still relatively mild, so you can usually get some good hang gliding in even then.

If you're looking for breathtaking views, Gulfport is definitely the place to go. You'll be able to see the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf of Mexico from up in the air, which is an amazing experience. There are also some nice beaches and other landmarks nearby that you can check out when you're done hang gliding.

Ocean Springs

If you're looking for a smaller town feel, Ocean Springs is the place for you. This town is located just east of Biloxi and has a population of just over 17,000 people. When it comes to hang gliding,  Ocean Springs is a great option because it has some of the best weather in the state.

The average temperature in Ocean Springs from spring through summer is around 82 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a great choice for warm-weather hang gliding. The fall and winter months are still relatively mild, so you can still typically find some good weather days to go hang gliding..

The views from Ocean Springs are also amazing, as you'll be able to see the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi Sound. There are also some great beaches nearby, as well as other landmarks that you can check out after your hang gliding adventure.

Jackson

Like most states in the US, you should always consider checking out the capital city when you visit. In Mississippi, that's going to be Jackson, located smack-dab in the heart of the state.  There are plenty of things to do in Jackson, including a number of museums, parks, and restaurants.

When it comes to hang gliding, the views aren't going to be quite as nice here as some of the other locations in the state, but in Mississippi, city views are very limited!  However, you will still be able to see some of the other landmarks in the city from up in the air.

The weather in Jackson is average for the state, with temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to the high-90s. This makes it a great place to go hang gliding year round. The views from Jackson are also a little different than in other parts of the state, so it's worth checking out if you're looking for something new.

Tupelo

Located in northern Mississippi,  Tupelo is a great place to go hang gliding. The views from the air are amazing, and you can see for miles. The landscape is pretty flat below, but there are plenty of colors to see and the views just never stop.

The average weather in spring and summer is perfect for hang gliding, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. However, in fall and winter the weather can be a bit more unpredictable. But if you're lucky, you might get to experience a cool winter hang gliding session.

There are plenty of other things to do in the area. It has one of the best shopping centers in the state, and it's the home of Elvis Presley's birthplace, which of course includes a museum to explore. Tupelo is located relatively close to Memphis, so you can make a weekend out  of it and enjoy both cities.

Natchez Trace State Park

Okay, we’ve talked about some of the best cities in the state to go hang gliding near, but let’s step outside of the city limits and explore the natural beauty of Mississippi a bit more. The first stop on our list is Natchez Trace State Park, located in northern Mississippi. This state park is known for its beautiful views, especially from the air! The park has miles of hiking trails and scenic outlooks, so you can explore the area before or after your hang gliding adventure.

The average weather in the spring and summer is perfect for hang gliding, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Fall and winter are also great times to visit, as the temperatures are still mild (averaging in the 50s and 60s).

If you're looking for a place to stay, there are several camping sites located within the park. Other than hang gliding,  the park offers plenty of other activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing.

The Pinnacle

Located in the town of Corinth, The Pinnacle is one of the best places to go hang gliding in Mississippi. With stunning views of the surrounding area, it's no wonder this spot is so popular among hang gliders. The average weather in the spring and summer is perfect for flying, with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, be warned that fall and winter can get a bit chilly with temperatures dipping into the 30s.

But don't let that stop you from enjoying all that The Pinnacle has to offer! There are plenty of other things to do in Corinth, such as hiking and camping. And if you're looking for something a little more urban, Memphis is just a short drive away.
